Fall 2017 Intern
What position are you in right now and how do you like it?
I am an analyst in the Credit Risk Modeling Group and I enjoy my position. It is fast-paced at times (which is ideal) and I have the opportunity to work on a wide-variety of projects.
What is the next step in your career, what do your next couple years look like?
While I am not sure what I will do next in my career. I do know that I want to continue to learn.
What do you enjoy most about your job now?
I like the nature of my role (being-fast paced and working on a variety of things); and, I enjoy the culture/environment I work in . . . the floor I work on is great and I have many wonderful interactions with my co-workers, daily. All of these things make me happy when I go to work in the morning!
How did GTE play into the decision to do what you are currently doing now or what you hope to do in the future?
When I interned at GTE I gained and augmented skills in financial modeling. So, I am able to provide these skills at work if they are required (it’s a nice skill to have).
How did your experience at GTE prepare you for your current career?
GTE was a friendly environment where I had the opportunity to interact on a regular basis with everyone in the office. Plus, the work at GTE was great from the standpoint of getting the chance to work on lower-middle market LBOs and getting to sit in on management’s meetings/discussions, on potential acquisitions.
Spring 2018 Intern
What is your education and other notable interests?
I am a member of the 2018 class at the University of Pittsburgh and majored in Accounting and Finance. Additionally, I was a member of Pitt’s CFA Research Challenge team.
What was your favorite part of GTE?
My favorite part of my GTE experience was the level of exposure we were given to the different aspects of evaluating business opportunities. I also enjoyed the weekly guest speakers!
I am in a finance rotation program and currently working as a Fund Financial Analyst on the US Product Ownership team at Vanguard. As an analyst, I track the daily activity that takes place in the funds each day. After the market closes, my team prices the mutual funds and sends the final NAVs to the media for publication. I really enjoy what I do; it is extremely high paced and requires you to think on your feet.
Since I am in a rotation program, I will be working in three other areas of finance over the next two years and will eventually launch into a permanent role at Vanguard. I also am pursuing my CFA charter.
The thing that I enjoy most about my job right now is the high paced, collaborative environment. We are constantly communicating with each other, as well as other teams to monitor market activity throughout the day to assure we publish accurate NAVs for our mutual funds.
After working at GTE, I knew I wanted to be in a collaborative environment, where I could bounce ideas off of my peers/managers like I did during my internship. It was extremely important for me to find that as I was looking to further my career.
Not only did my experience at GTE help develop my technical skills and build business acumen to prepare me for my current career, but also I found it extremely valuable hearing from our managers and guest speakers about their different work experiences. Hearing about those experiences taught me that it is okay not to have a direct career path and not to be afraid to take on new roles if the opportunity presents itself!
Fall 2017 intern
I am a member of the University of Pittsburgh class of 2017 and majored in Economics and History.
What I loved most about my experience at GTE was the welcoming atmosphere and being surrounded by bright minds. Having the opportunity to both listen and discuss real world situations with the OIR's and fellow interns proved a fantastic hands-on experience. In addition, I was able to gain a great deal of exposure into various niches of finance and business through both the work I accomplished as an intern in addition to the series of speakers who came to the office which I always enjoyed. I highly value my experience as an intern at GTE and it gave me a bearing as to what specific areas of the industry I saw myself launching a career in.
